My thanks are due to the Editor of the “Pall Mall Gazette” for permission to republish two of the following essays. The rest, with one exception, appeared in the “National Observer” and it is a matter of profound regret that, owing to the surcease of that paper, I can no longer ask permission of its former Editor to republish them.
