Template:Generic sidenote/doc

This is a format agnostic sidenote template.

We currently have multiple templates for sidenotes, but they all have various issues and trade-offs. They all work by specifying how the sidenote should be formatted. There is currently no consensus on how sidenotes should be formatted, nor how the various issues and trade-offs should be addressed.

This template bypasses the whole issue by being format agnostic. This means that the actual formatting of the sidenotes using this template doesn't matter, and may change over time. Thus, if/when the community agrees upon a general-purpose approach to sidenote formatting that addresses the various issues and tradeoffs, this template can be updated to use the new approach.
