Um, could someone cite the source of this text? This is one in particular where it matters in terms of which edition this is. It looks like the 2nd edn. to me except it is missing the preface to the 2nd edn. (Most online copies are of the 2nd edn, not the 1st)

The text is the one of the second edition from 1874. It follows from comparing, in the chapter one, the paragraphs that start with "The celebrated sculptor, Mr. Woolner"; only in the second edition does the paragraph contain the string "Prof. Ludwig Meyer".
