- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, banned in China[1]
- The Call of the Wild by Jack London, banned in Italy and Yugoslavia in 1929[2]
- Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence, banned in the United States until 1959,[3] in the United Kingdom until 1960[4] and in Australia through the 1960s[5]
- Lysistrata by Aristophanes, banned in the United States under the 1873 Comstock laws which are no longer enforced.
- Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe, banned in the United States under the 1873 Comstock laws which are no longer enforced.
- The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, banned in the United States under the 1873 Comstock laws which are no longer enforced.
- Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Cleland, banned in the United States until a 1966 Supreme Court case revoked charges of obscenity
- Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley, banned in South Africa in 1955[6]
- Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, banned in South Africa - possibly related to its title
- The Flowers of Evil by Charles Baudelaire was censored in France. Baudelaire was put on trial, and has to pay a fine.

- Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1770, banned by United States Customs in 1929
- The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine, banned in the United Kingdom in 1792, Paine was put on trial, as were publishers.
- The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, banned in South Africa
