TULIPS
Dear little tulips, give me a sip,—
Silver cup, gold goblet, and red lip,—
Holding full measure of honey and dew,
Drinking in sunshine from skies so blue,
When the clouds gather, angry to sight,
Quickly your cup closes up tight,
For plain water is not to your taste;
Its simple touch destroys you in haste.
Gladness and laughter you'll only hold;
With this you're free and dashingly bold,
Lifting your cups in long slender arms,
Full to the brim with your brilliant charms,
This is your mission; to cheer and give
Pleasure and happiness while you live.
