Appropriations herein made for the Coast and Geodetic Survey shall not be available for allowance to civilian or other officers for subsistence while on duty at Washington (except as hereinbefore pro- vided for officers of the field force ordered to Washington for short periods for consultation with the director), except as now provided by law. Not to exceed $650 of the appropriations herein made for the Coast and Geodetic Survey shall be available for expenses of attendance at meetings concerned with the work of the Coast and Geodetic Survey when incurred on the written authority of the Secretary. Not to exceed $2,500 of the appropriations herein made for the Coast and Geodetic Survey shall be available for the payment of part-time or intermittent employment in the District of Columbia, or elsewhere, of such architects, engineers, scientists, and technicists as may be contracted for by the Secretary, at a rate of pay not exceeding $25 per diem for any person so employed. 421 Subsistence. Intermittent em- ployment of archi- tects, etc. BUREAU OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMMERCE Departmental salaries and expenses: For personal services (not to exceed $1,421,000) and other necessary expenses of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce at the seat of government in per- forming the duties imposed by law or in pursuance of law; travel; newspapers (not exceeding $1,500), periodicals, and books of refer- ence; fees and mileage of witnesses, and other contingent expenses in the District of Columbia; $1,550,000: Provided, That expenses, except printing and binding, of field studies or surveys conducted by departmental personnel of the Bureau shall be payable from the amount herein appropriated. Field office service: For salaries (not to exceed $314,000), travel and all other expenses necessary to operate and maintain regional, district, and cooperative branch offices for the collection and dis- semination of information useful in the development and improve- ment of commerce throughout the United States and its possessions, including foreign and domestic newspapers (not exceeding $300), periodicals and books of reference, $355,000. The appropriations for the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce shall be available in an amount not to exceed $6,500 for expenses of attendance at meetings concerned with the promotion of foreign and domestic commerce, or either, and also expenses of illustrating the work of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Com- merce by showing of maps, charts, and graphs at such meetings, when incurred on the written authority of the Secretary. PATENT OFFICE Salaries: For personal services in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, $4,000,000. Photolithographing: For producing copies of weekly issue of draw- ings of patents and designs; reproduction of copies of drawings and specifications of exhausted patents, designs, trade-marks, and other papers, such other papers when reproduced for sale to be sold at not less than cost plus 10 per centum; reproduction of foreign patent drawings; photo prints of pending application drawings; and photo- stat and photographic supplies and dry mounts, $225,000: Provided, That the headings of the drawings for patented cases may be multi- graphed in the Patent Office for the purpose of photolithography.
