"(i) by exercise of the power of self-government of an Indian tribe independent of State law; or "(ii) by operation of State law providing specifically for housing authorities for Indians, including regional housing authorities in the State of Alaska.". (g) INDIAN TRIBE.—Section 3(b) of the United States Housing Act of 1937 (as amended by subsection (f) of this section) is further amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph: "(12) The term 'Indian tribe' means any tribe, band, pueblo, group, community, or nation of Indians or Alaska Natives.". SEC. 5. CONFORMING AMENDMENTS TO TITLE I.
The United States Housing Act of 1937 is amended by inserting before section 1 the following title heading:
"TITLE I—GENERAL PROGRAM OF ASSISTED HOUSING". SEC. 6. APPLICABILITY.
The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development may carry out pn^rams to provide lower income housing on Indian reservations and other Indian areas only in accordance with the amendments made by this Act, commencing on whichever of the following occurs earlier: (1) EFFECTIVE DATE OF REGULATIONS.—The effective date of r^ulations issued under section 205 of the United States Housing Act of 1937. (2) 90 DAYS.—The expiration of the 90-day period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act Approved June 29, 1988.
