22a

A frank modern reprint of the other state of number 22.

The publisher of this reprint says that he made it from a print in the Matsukata Collection, and if he made it accurately the original he used cannot be the trimmed one reproduced in the Vignier-Inada Catalogue, number 285, and rephotographed from that by Rumpf for his number 26 and in Ukiyo-ye Taisei, Vol. VIII, number 42. We would not exhibit a reprint of the state shown by the Vignier-Inada Catalogue and by Rumpf if we were able to find an original, or if the difference in the blocks were less conspicuous and less important.

Ōban. Dark mica ground. Signed: Tōshūsai Sharaku.
