In Fig. 8 we show the steam chest in elevation and the exhaust valves in section. It will be noticed that the latter are triple-ported and that their face is on the bottom and not on top, so that wear will make them tight instead of leaky, as would be the case if the face were at the top. The triple port reduces the travel to a minimum and makes the operation of these valves very easy. It will also be noticed that the arrangement is admirably adapted to relieve the cylinder of any water, as gravity promptly and independently ejects it.
