He landed in Texas with his father's family on January 15, 1856. He enlisted in the Confederate army in July, 1861, and served four years, receiving four wounds. After the Civil War, in 1866, he entered Washing ton College, now Washington and Lee Uni versity, and graduated with the degree of
elected Attorney General of Texas and served one term, declining on account of in sufficient salary to be a candidate a second time. In 1886 he was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Montana, and served on that bench two years, resign ing on account of the rigorous climate. Re-
