AFTER VACATION.

Here they come, the happy crew,
Merry monarchs through and through,—
Laughing, chattering, all together,
In the red-leafed autumn weather.

Once again the streets are gay
As a gypsy's holiday;
Once again has life begun
Fresh and fair beneath the sun.

Yesterday the toiling town
Dull with care was bending down;
Now to-day it lifts its head,
For to-day dull care has fled,—
