A SHEAF GLEANED

She went away,—the banished maid,
To gain her bread 'neath other skies,
Long, long the patient mother stayed—
And followed her with eager eyes.
But when her bitter grief no more
Her child might witness,—then there came
A shower of tears, that showed how sore
The heart was tried,—and still her name
Came from afar,—adieu!
Oh mother—and adieu!
Adieu under the grace of God!
