AS STATED IN THE POSTS BELOW, THIS VOLUME WAS A "TEXT COPY AND PASTE" PROJECT IN WHICH SOME LINES WERE OVERLOOKED. FOUND SEVERAL MISSING TEXT LINES WHICH I ADDED. ALSO TRIED MY BEST TO CHECK PAGE BY PAGE, BUT IT'S POSSIBLE THAT I MISSED SOME LINES. — Ineuw talk 20:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

This volume is a copy and paste project. The proofread text can be found here. unsigned comment by Mattwj2002 (talk) 07:05, 18 February 2009.

The Gutenberg etext is a different work. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:57, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

ZSBot has uploaded OCR

[edit]

ZSBot (talkcontribs) has uploaded OCR quality text for this book. I think all of those pages should be deleted. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:59, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yep, jumped the gun on that one. Didn't even notice that PG already had a version that we were going to copy/paste.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 01:33, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Can you use a bot to delete them all ? John Vandenberg (chat) 05:12, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Please don't delete them: on PG I found only October to December 1915; on Archive.org January to September 1915: they complete each other and we will need both if we don't find other sources. -Zyephyrus (talk) 16:42, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, great. Then we need to find where October begins. John Vandenberg (chat) 22:54, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
My bot can't. It doesn't have admin capabilities. We should have TalBot do it.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 18:57, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
PG's text begins like this:

THE POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY VOLUME LXXXVI JULY TO SEPTEMBER, 1915

THE SCIENTIFIC MONTHLY VOLUME I OCTOBER TO DECEMBER, 1915

EDITED BY J. McKEEN CATTELL

THE SCIENTIFIC MONTHLY ------ OCTOBER, 1915 -------------

THE EVOLUTION OF THE STARS AND THE FORMATION OF THE EARTH. II

BY DR. WILLIAM WALLACE CAMPBELL

DIRECTOR OF THE LICK OBSERVATORY, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

THE PRINCIPLES OF SPECTROSCOPY

If I understand it correctly, it begins with October. Do we create a page The Evolution of the Stars and the Formation of the Earth and copy-paste this first text? --Zyephyrus (talk) 20:16, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It looks like we have two different etexts. PG has the first edition of Scientific Monthly, while we have the edition of Popular Science Monthly that was released in the same year. See w:Popular Science and w:Scientific Monthly for more information. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:55, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have listed some subjects and added links to the corresponding pages.Looks like there is an overview first, with first page of each article, and then we can navigate in the usual order. It's easier if we come back to the Index page to find some pages, for instance p. 10 can't be found after page 9 but is found if we come back to the Index page. ---Zyephyrus (talk) 09:38, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

what is proper?

[edit]

I'm looking at Page:Popular Science Monthly Volume 86.djvu/13, and it says in- volved, when the original has a line break; in-
volved. I understand that this is probably due to the OCR, but is this something I should change, or are we better off reflecting what is written in the original?--142.25.81.159 22:40, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikisource!
Preserving the original line breaks is optional. One day we may have the ability to show the original line breaks, but currently the only way they can be seen is in the edit screen.
If you do wish to record where the hyphenated words are, you can use {{hyphenated word}} and {{hyphenated compound word}}.

Ok, thanks, that makes a lot of sense.--142.25.81.159 22:41, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
