Missing plates

Missing plates have been discovered while checking the photo index and are being scanned.

Running heads

  • The heads are centered ALL CAPS, but we don't need to copy the wide letter spacing because we're not producing a facsimile. Even-numbered (left-hand) pages are "CHARLESTON", odd-numbered (right-hand) pages are "SECTION TITLE". No page number. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 11:11, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

OCR

The Clean Up OCR extension gets rid of line endings fine; I can help set people up with the TemplateScript extension if you don't have it installed in your common.js already (see my User:Giantflightlessbirds/common.js page for the text you need to copy). Note that cleanup strips all the hyphens off line endings, so check to make sure a word like "gold-seekers", broken across a line, isn't turned into "goldseekers". —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 11:11, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • I've cleaned up and uploaded all the images, I think, and they're ready to add to the page. Thanks Mike! I have added the images to Wikisource, and working through each one in Commons to add captions and depicts statements. However, there are a couple of issues - see my notes under missing pages and pages that need fixing (I don't have any idea on how to fix these...). Argh, what a mess. I'll go back to Kristie and see if we can get the missing pages, create a new PDF with the correct pagination, and upload it as a replacement. From about page 244 (page number 205) onwards there are lots of lists that are not bulleted or numbered.

Initially I used : and :: to indent.

There are several pages missing from the original scan, which means these pages are not in the index.

Pages in the Wikisource index that need fixing

There are two pages in the Wikisource index that need fixing.

Current page 252:

  • The scanned image for this page needs replacing in Wikisource
  • It is correct in the PDF, but for this page in Wikisource it is a duplicate of the previous page (page 251)
  • The images on this page have been scanned and are in Commons
  • The Wikisource text for the page is correct, but it obviously doesn't match with the scanned page

Current page 262:

  • The page and scanned image for this page needs REMOVING from Wikisource
  • It is correct in the PDF, but for this page in Wikisource the image is a duplicate of the previous page (page 261)
  • The text for the page and the correct image is included in current page 263 - which is validated and should be kept
  • This means that the current page 262 is not required and can be removed.

Nor do I. You're right, the pages are correct in the PDF, which I just downloaded again to check, and wrong when they display in Wikisource. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 22:47, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
This is now fixed! I did a purge or the cache had been cleared, so images now match up:
  • Page 252 is now correct, so have removed the problematic status.
  • For pages 262-266 I have moved/updated/added the text as required, so these pages are all now correct.
