The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland, or Holinshed's Chronicles

William Shakespeare's primary reference work for most of his histories and many of his other plays, including Macbeth.
The 1577 edition was compiled by Holinshed, William Harrison and Richard Stanyhurst; the 1587 edition was edited by John Hooker, assisted by Francis Thynne, Abraham Fleming and John Stow. The 1807 edition, reprinted from the 1587 edition, with the excisions (castrations) ordered by the Privy council replaced, was edited by Sir Henry Ellis
