Ann Glenday
(1809–1890)

Anne Glenday was born in Forfar, Angus, Scotland, in 1809, to Peter Glenday and Anne Lindsay. In 1816, her family arrived in St. Charles, Missouri, which was the home of her mother's brother, Thomas Lindsay. About 1822, Anne's mother died; shortly thereafter, her father and older sister returned to Scotland. Anne remained in St. Charles, and became the ward of her uncle, Thomas Lindsay. In 1828, Anne married Thomas Russell Durfee, a Presbyterian minister. They had two daughters, Jane Amanda Durfee and Margaret Glenday Durfee. Thomas died in 1833. Anne continued to farm in St. Charles County, Missouri for many years before moving in with her daughter Jane and son-in-law John Jay Johns. She was a prolific letter writer, ardent Presbyterian, and strong advocate of education for both women and men.
