James of Hockliffe, Beds, D.Med., fellow of Corpus Christi Coll. 1867-79, incorp. 26 Feb., 1870, aged 46; hon. fellow 1882, professor of jurisprudence 1869-79, created D.C.L. 21 June, 1865; B.A. from Pembroke Coll., Cambridge (senior classic, 1st chancellor's medallist), 1844; tutor Trinity Hall 1844-7, M.A. 1847, LL.D. 1847, regius professor of civil law 1847, Rede lecturer 1875, bar.-at-law, Lincoln's Inn, 1850, and of the Middle Temple (ad eundem) 1862, bencher 1873, law member of the council of governor-general of India 1862-70, and a member of the council of Secretary of State for India 1871-88, K.C.S.I. 20 May, 1871; fellow London University and member of senate 1871-88; master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, 1877, until his death 5 Feb., 1888.
